I am a portrait photographer and filmmaker whose work explores how people construct their image in the context of family and social obligations, and the role humor plays in both making and undoing acts of self-creation. In my photography and film work, I try to balance the self-image my subjects project while also revealing something deeper. A lot of my work directing people in both mediums is about capturing a spontaneous moment within someone’s persona to locate a feeling or sentiment that might be out of character, but conveys something that is present. Who and what is revealed in these moments? What does the unselfconscious expression of identity look like? These are some questions that influence my work.
